Do you do community service? Have you done between 50-150 hours in the past year? Are you a senior that goes to school in Redmond?
Then you may have an opportunity to win a scholarship up to $1500 for school. The American Legion Post 161, Faith Lutheran Church and a private donor have stepped up to acknowledge teens who have gained insight in the value of giving back to their community. They awarded $6000 last year and have also done that this year to four graduating seniors.
This year’s recipients:
Alex Vaschillo is a graduating senior at Redmond High School. Alex gave over 150 hours of community service this past year. One of his volunteer opportunities was to tutor students in math, which is his passion.
Michelle Solomon, Redmond High School, gave over 150 hours leading the youth council in Redmond and with a club working with developmentally challenged kids.
Jake Whitten, Redmond High School, has performed over 260 hours of community service with the Redmond Police Explorers and at the Old Fire House Teen Center.
Sabrina Hsieh, Redmond High School, performed over 170 hours of community service including her work on the youth council in the many projects that they performed throughout the year and with the Redmond Library.
The scholarships are to acknowledge teens in Redmond for the work they give to their community and the benefits they see in this work. Consideration was also given to youth who have struggled personally and have seen how community service has changed their lives. One of the leaders in this project was Mr. Gary Compton.
Mr. Compton states “This is a win-win project for everyone involved. A win for those providing the funds, for the satisfaction of knowing they have contributed to the success of a young person, a win for the community knowing it has benefited from someone’s community service and finally a win for the young person, a scholarship to assist them in furthering their education.”
The American Legion and Faith Lutheran Church hope that other community organizations or individuals that would like to support this great cause contact them directly and donate to the scholarship fund.
“This scholarship is a great idea to recognize teens for all the service they give back to the community and will encourage others to give also. I hope others will support this worthy cause.” said Ken Wong, Teen Programs Administrator for the City of Redmond.
