How are things going at the RSC?

Can you believe that the RSC has been open for extended evening hours for over a year? Some evenings have been pretty quiet, but little by little people have discovered that the RSC is a comfortable and enjoyable place to pass some time. Our air cooled building was especially popular during the hot summer evenings.

You might notice that a few things have changed. Our Computer Corner is now by the Library. We are gradually making progress in upgrading the computers and we are now happy to say that free wireless internet access is available at the RSC.

The wide screen television and Wii console in the Fireplace Lounge has become very popular. Bowling and golf are the games most played with a bowling league meeting regularly on Mondays and Wednesdays. Come join the fun; we have a volunteer who will teach you how to use the controllers and get started, just sign up at the front desk for a free introductory session.

Our Multipurpose Room now boasts beautiful double doors that open out to our garden plaza. We anticipate that this enhancement will be particularly appreciated by the many brides that rent the RSC for their wedding & reception.

All of our usual amenities are all still available - you are welcome to relax in the Fireplace Lounge; browse for a good book in the honor system lending library; or practice your break in the pool room. We hope to soon have our Beverage Bar open in the evening also. (If you are interested in volunteering let us know.)

Don’t let the word “Senior” in the facility’s name stop you, most of the people participating in our programs, both day and evening, are active and energetic. All evening programs are open to ages 18 years and older.

Playing wii Open Monday through Thursday 8:30 am to 9 pm and Fridays 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Planning ahead
In June 2010 the RSC will celebrate their 20th Anniversary. In preparation for this event a new committee has been formed. Their goal is to sort through the RSC’s history to make a display for the event and write an article for the newsletter. If you are interested in participating on the committee please call Janice Dunlap at 425-556-2314. The group is also looking for past participants who might like to be involved in this event so please let us hear from you.

Got Ideas?
Have you got an idea for a class you’d like to teach? We are looking for people who would like to share their hobbies and skills with others during both the daytime and evening hours. Just call Teri Burke at 425-556-2342 to request a program proposal form and to discuss the possbilities.

In December the Senior Advisory Committee will bring in two new members. This committee consists of eleven people age 50 or better who serve a two-year term with the option of a second consecutive term. Nine of the eleven members must reside within the Redmond city limits. The committee meets on the third Thursday of each month, typically from 10 to 11:45 am.

The Senior Advisory Committee acts as a community liaison to the staff providing feedback from participants. The committee also helps to create a vision for the RSC’s future, and to promote and acknowledge volunteers’ contributions.

In addition to these monthly meetings, members are also asked to participate on one or more subcommittees based on their own particular interests and available time. There are eight subcommittees, each addressing a different aspect of the various operations required to make the RSC a fun and interesting place to visit. The committees are: Fundraising, Hospitality, Intergenerational, Marketing, Newsletter, Programs & Special Events, Volunteers and Health & Wellness.

The subcommittees rely upon the participation of additional volunteers to achieve their goals. If you find any of the topics of interest please complete a volunteer application (available at the front desk or by calling 425-556-2314) and join us.

All Senior Advisory Committee members wear a name tag when they are at the RSC. So take a minute to introduce your self and thank them for their services. And if you have something on your mind, feel free to share it with them!
